The first of the places to see in Como could not be other than the lungolago , the “seafront” –or, rather, the lakefront– of Lake Como . After all, the city gives its name to the lake, but the lake gives fame to the city.

Since 2015, in the middle of the lake, but very close to the shore, stands the Life Electric , a monument more than 16 metres high. It is dedicated to Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the battery and Como's most illustrious son. According to its designer, the Polish-born American architect Daniel Libeskind, it was inspired by the electrical tension between the two poles of a battery. You can walk to its base from the Mafalda di Savoia lake .

On the lakefront , just before the footbridge leading to Life Electric , is the Monument to the European Resistance . A 1983 sculpture by Milanese Gianni Colombo. It contains stones from the Nazi extermination camps and the city of Hiroshima.

2. The Voltian temple
Walking along Lake Como, after the detour to Life Electric , you will notice a large neoclassical structure that looks like a temple. It is the Tempio Voltiano , a building erected to honour, once again, Alessandro Volta and to give value to his studies.

It was the initiative of a local cotton businessman to celebrate the centenary of Volta's death, back in 1927. It contains originals and copies of scientific instruments, documents and materials on the life of the famous Comasco. We didn't go in, but if you're interested, here are the prices and opening hours. However, do go and see it from the outside, it's interesting. And while you're there, say hello to the swans.
3. The climb up the Brunate funicular and the views of Lake Como
